The Asian/Pacific Bar of California Formalizes Process to Endorse Judicial Candidates

As of April 2008, the Asian/Pacific Bar of California (ABC) will begin the process of endorsing candidates for appointment to the Superior, Appellate and Supreme Courts in the State of California.

The ABC has formalized its process for endorsements and each candidate will be considered and vetted by the ABC through a transparent, rigorous and documented process.

Those parties interested in the ABC’s judicial endorsement should refer to the formal process document available online here.

ABC 25th Annual Summit Meeting -- October 18, 2006

ABC will hold the 25th annual Asian/Pacific American Bar summit meeting in Los Angeles. The date is Wednesday, October 18, 2006.

The purpose of our annual meeting is to meet with state legislators and the Governor’s office to discuss judicial and other appointments and receive updates on statewide issues. It is also a great opportunity to connect with the Asian/Pacific leaders from each of the bars in the state. This year we will be meeting with the Governor’s Appointment Secretary, Timothy Simon, as well as a number of State Assembly Members and other local leaders.

The Asian/Pacific Bar of California (“ABC”) is the statewide umbrella coalition of all Asian/ Pacific American bar associations in California. ABC was founded in 1982 by Asian American bar associations in San Francisco, Sacramento, and Los Angeles to create a collective statewide voice on behalf of the Asian Pacific American legal community. As we grew larger, we included San Diego, the Silicon Valley, and Ventura County. Our member organizations also include Filipino American, Korean American, Japanese American, Vietnamese American, Chinese American, South Asian American and Taiwanese American bar associations throughout California. We are also an affiliate of NAPABA.

Leaders from all California Asian/Pacific American bar associations are invited to the 25th Annual meeting on October 18, 2006, in Los Angeles from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the State Bar of California, 1150 South Olive Street, Los Angeles 90015. APABA-LA’s Ninth Annual Installation Dinner.

The event, whose theme is “UNITY,” will be held on Friday, October 27, 2006, starting at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception followed by an elegant sit-down dinner at the Los Angeles Athletic Club, 431 West 7th Street, in Downtown Los Angeles. The dinner promises to be a memorable event, especially since Bill Lann Lee, former U.S. Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, will be the keynote speaker and recipient of APABA’s Public Service Award for his career and accomplishments. Mr. Lee served under Janet Reno in the Clinton Administration, and we are truly honored that he will be joining us.

National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys

The National Conference of Vietnamese American Attorneys (“NCVAA”), in partnership with the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Northern California and the Vietnamese American Bar Association of Southern California, will hold its inaugural event in Silicon Valley on September 29 and 30, 2006. This conference will bring together, for the first time, Vietnamese American attorneys from all over the United States to discuss legal and community issues affecting Vietnamese Americans.

Vietnamese Americans continue to be one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. The Conference will offer Vietnamese American attorneys opportunities to come together to network, to hear from distinguished speakers, and to attend interesting educational programs. There will be panel discussions from our distinguished Vietnamese American judges, Hon. Thang Nguyen Barrett, Prof. Wendy Duong, Hon. Jacquelyn Nguyen, Hon. Nho Nguyen, Hon. Tu Pham (invited, but not confirmed), and Hon. Phan Quang Tue; and Vietnamese American attorneys in elected offices, Assembly member Van Tran, School Board Members Lan Quoc Nguyen and Trung Nguyen; workshop on Client Development from the perspective of Vietnamese American Attorneys James Nguyen (Partner, Foley), Tasha Nguyen (former Partner Holland & Knight), Thien Nguyen (Corporate Counsel, Qualcomm, invited but not confirmed), Thuy Thi Nguyen (General Counsel, Peralta Community College District), and Luan Tran (Partner, Lee & Tran); and required California MCLE courses from Sixth Appellate District Court of Appeal, Justice Nathan Mihara and Santa Clara County Counsel Ann Ravel, as well as other courses discussing hot issues impacting the Vietnamese American community.

AABA Career Day

Mark your calendar for AABA Career Day on August 26, 2006 from 8:15 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at USF School of Law. Career Day is a great opportunity for law students to find out more from experienced attorney panelists on how to land a job in the public and private sectors. Students will also have a chance to brush up on their interviewing skills in one-on-one 30-minute mock interview sessions with an attorney. Lunch will also be provided.

In the meantime, we need attorney volunteers to help conduct the mock interview sessions. Each year, we receive feedback from students who comment on how helpful the mock interviews are in preparing them for the job search process. The success of this event would not be possible without our attorney volunteers who generously share their time and insight. We provide attorneys with student resumes and sample interview questions ahead of time.
